ESP Mounter Pro is a minimalist application that resides in the status bar and offers you the possibility to quickly mount the EFI System Partition associated to storage devices that are using the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI).

Type sudo mkdir /boot/efi to create the standard mount point for the EFI System Partition (ESP). Type sudo mount /dev/sda1 /boot/efi to mount the ESP at /boot/efi. (Change /dev/sda1 if your ESP has an unusual partition number.) You can use gdisk to check the ESP's number, if you like. Type ls /boot/efi.

Manage your EFI system partitions with ease via the status bar

Upon launch, ESP Mounter Pro places a small menulet in your status bar, where you get to see the complete list of volumes connected to your computer.

Note that once you activate the ESP Mounter Pro panel, it remains visible and on top of all other windows until you click your mouse again anywhere on the window.

ESP Mounter Pro does not come with any customization options, yet you can choose to have it launched at login. Moreover, if you want it to detect newly connected devices, you have to restart the utility since it does not feature a refresh button.

Within the ESP Mounter Pro main window, you get to see details about each volume, such as the disk name, type, and available media. The utility employs different icon designs for internal and removable disks to make them more easily recognizable.

Mount or unmount the EFI system partition for any volume with a mouse click

Next to each volume, ESP Mounter Pro displays a 'Mount' button that you get to use whenever you wish to effortlessly open the EFI partition. When the task is completed, you get to view the ESP in a Finder window and unmount it with the same ease when you are done.

Note that the EFI system partitions are designed to store files that are loaded by the firmware on system startup, so you should be careful if you plan to make any adjustments.

Bottom line, ESP Mounter Pro offers you the possibility to quickly access the EFI System Partition associated with any volume connected to your Mac, without too much trouble.

So: how important is that partition?

A EFI partition is created when a drive (HDD, SSD, or flash) is partitioned as GUID. The EFI partition holds information specific to that system's hardware and includes drivers for the boot up process ... so, yes, it's pretty important.

Assuming I need it, how do I get it back?
