Windows Vista Ultimate Edition is my latest desktop machine at work and some USB audio devices have given me nothing but problems. While most USB audio devices have installed just fine, since they use the standard Microsoft USB audio class, some devices, such as a Jabra Netcom 9350 wouldn't install correctly. Apparently Vista does mandatory DRM checking for USB Audio Devices. I've heard of many users complaining that their Bluetoothheadsets no longer work once they upgraded to Vista due to this new DRM protection. After hours of frustration trying to get it to work, I finally decided to call Jabra (who acquired GN Netcom - See today's interesting video of Jabra/GN Netcom on the 10 blog - to see if a Vista driver was available. At first they told me the drivers for all the products were online. I explained this wasn't true - I already looked everywhere on their site and there was no 9350 drivers anywhere. Perhaps the transition from GN Netcom to Jabra due to the acquisition has them a bit confused. In any event, I then spoke to another technician who told me they would need to upgrade my 9350's firmware to be compliant with Vista's more stringent USB audio requirements. He said they do this free of charge if I just ship them the unit to:

I have partitioned my computer and set it up as a dual-boot Windows 7/Windows XP system. My GN 9350 headset microphone has always worked and continues to work very well with XP but when I boot up in Windows 7 the device is identified in the device manager as 'GN 9350' but the Properties of the device show 'The device cannot start (code 10)'. When I tried the automated troubleshooting fix it told me that there was a problem with the USB audio device driver. But from what I can tell it is using the standard Microsoft default USB audio device driver. When I try to update the driver, it tells me the correct driver is already installed. My first guess is that the GN 9350 just isn't compatible with Windows 7. Any thoughts?

Okay, after some research the bottom line answer is that my GN 9350 microphone is just not compatible with Windows 7. According to some, it is possible to send the microphone back to Jabra and they will reconfigure it to work with Windows 7 to the tune of $110. The other option is to mess around with the registry and trying to trick Windows 7 by using the older Windows XP USB audio files. That's not a solution that I'm comfortable applying. So I guess I'm going to stick with Windows XP until they pry it from my cold dead fingers!

Anyone else have thoughts?

I am dictating this response using my GN9350e microphone in Windows 7 pro 64-bit environment.

I transitioned from using this microphone in Windows XP without any problems whatsoever.

From my perspective I am experiencing no problems with this microphone in Windows 7.

Have you tried creating a new user?

My microphone is a straight GN9350 not the 'e' version. I'm thinking that the updated 'e' version may be more compatible with the newer operating systems.

I have not even install Dragon on the Windows 7 side of my partition as yet. I mainly started using Windows 7 to try out the included Windows Speech Recognition, but as I said, Windows 7 will not even accept audio input from my microphone.

Is the microphone recognised in the control panel under sound?

Something else to try might be to use another USB port.

Our testing found the GN9350 to be too non-noise canceling for us to recommend it for speech recognition use even in a quiet environment. We would have been happier if the Jabra GN9350e were a little bit more noise canceling but since GN Netcom/Jabra improved the noise canceling characteristics of this microphone, we can now recommend it for speech recognition use in Windows 7 and we dictated this message on our Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit computer with the 9350e.

Lunis (or anyone else), just for the record and my peace of mind, are you able to confirm that my original GN 9350, not the 'e' version, will not work with Windows 7. Is there by chance some patch that could be applied? Am I missing something? My experience with the GN 9350 has been positive. I've been using it for about two years now and have been satisfied with its performance. I've never specifically evaluated its noise canceling characteristics so I can't readily comment on that. I do know that I use it in a computer lab with a few other people at nearby workstations talking in regular conversational tones. My accuracy is completely acceptable for me. I'm a quadriplegic doing hands-free computing so I use Dragon for computer control and dictating e-mails and posts such as this.At home I have a Acoustic Magic Voice Tracker which I am also satisfied with and have been using for over five years. It does become unusable when my kids are screaming around the house or my wife is blow drying her hair in the bathroom next to our bedroom. But in most normal home situations it performs perfectly fine. I have two desktop computer speakers playing at a low but listenable level and they don't cause any performance issues. With that being said, I have read your comments on the ME 31 being your recommended 'array' microphone for distance speech recognition work. Sounds like I may get one of those when the time is right.

We can't guarantee that your microphone will not work in Windows 7 but we can guarantee that the Jabra 9350e is a revamped version of the 9350 which you can verify by turning over the base station and reading the label on the bottom. We have little doubt that the driver that's incorporated into the 9350e would probably work equally well with the 9350 but that particular driver is most likely hardcoded into the unit so that when you insert the USB plug into your computer, it transmits the driver information. We are not certain if the driver is hardcoded but we suspect it is (no DVD or Windows setup). Just simple information being transferred through the USB cable which is gone when you unplug the USB cable.

Have you tried contacting GN net com in order to find out whether or not your GN 9350 will work in Windows 7.

I have done a search of their website and cannot find anything that would indicate that it will not work with Windows 7.

According to the setup instructions once the microphone is connected to the computer through the USB port Windows should automatically detect it.

Another suggestion if you have access to another computer running Windows 7 would be to try and plug the microphone into the computer to see if it recognises it.
